Key systems are a type of phone system that is most typically seen in smaller businesses. This is because they are built to only handle between five and forty extensions. The telephones have buttons that light up whenever a line is in use and users can push a specific button for making a call to an in-house extension. For the most part, it is controlled by a central control unit. Key systems are considered one of the more cost-effective communication options for a business and may come with all or some of the following features:

- intercom
- speakerphone
- paging system
- memory dialing
- on-hold music or messaging
While these types of features are definitely helpful, key systems are not as easily modified as other types of phone systems.
